How Do I Know If My Windows Driver Is Standard Or Dch

Post by Nickie »

I recently updated my Windows operating system to the latest version and now I am in the process of updating all my device drivers as well. However, I'm a bit confused about whether my current driver is a standard driver or a DCH (Declarative, Componentized, Hardware Support Apps) driver. I've tried searching online, but I couldn't find a clear answer on how to determine this. Can someone please provide me with a reliable method or tool to identify whether my Windows driver is a standard or DCH driver? I would also appreciate it if you could share a driver link for a DCH driver, just in case I need to update mine. Thank you in advance for your help!

Device Specification:

- Device Name: Windows Driver
- Type: Standard or DCH (Declarative Componentized Hardware) Driver
- Purpose: To allow proper functioning and communication between the Windows operating system and connected hardware devices.

Troubleshooting Questions and Answers:

1. Question: How can I determine if my Windows driver is a Standard or DCH driver?
Answer: To check if your Windows driver is Standard or DCH, you can follow these steps:
- Open the Windows Device Manager by pressing Win + X, then selecting "Device Manager."
- Expand the category of the device for which you want to check the driver type.
- Right-click on the specific device and select "Properties."
- In the "Driver" tab, look for the "Driver Provider" field. If it shows "Microsoft" as the provider, it is a Standard driver. If "DCH" or "DCHU" is mentioned, it is a DCH driver.

2. Question: What are the differences between Standard and DCH drivers?
Answer: The differences between Standard and DCH drivers are as follows:
- Install Method: Standard drivers are installed using the traditional installer package, while DCH drivers are installed through a new Universal Windows driver package format.
- Update Method: Standard drivers can be manually updated, downloaded, and installed from device manufacturer websites. DCH drivers, on the other hand, can only be updated through Windows Update.
- Legacy Support: Standard drivers support older operating systems, while DCH drivers are primarily designed for Windows 10 and future versions.

3. Question: Can I switch between Standard and DCH drivers?
Answer: Yes, it is generally possible to switch between Standard and DCH drivers, but it is recommended to consult the device manufacturer's instructions or support documentation before attempting the switch. Some hardware devices may only support one driver type or may require specific procedures to switch drivers. Additionally, it's important to note that switching drivers may have an impact on the device's compatibility and performance, so careful consideration and backup of important data are advised.
